An excerpt characterizing Myshagin, Nikolai Ivanovich

“Oh yes, terribly stupid...” said Pierre.
“So let me convey your regret, and I am sure that our opponents will agree to accept your apology,” said Nesvitsky (like other participants in the case and like everyone else in similar cases, not yet believing that it would come to an actual duel) . “You know, Count, it is much nobler to admit your mistake than to bring matters to an irreparable point.” There was no resentment on either side. Let me talk...
- No, what to talk about! - said Pierre, - all the same... So it’s ready? - he added. - Just tell me where to go and where to shoot? – he said, smiling unnaturally meekly. “He picked up the pistol and began asking about the method of release, since he had not yet held a pistol in his hands, which he did not want to admit. “Oh yes, that’s it, I know, I just forgot,” he said.
“No apologies, nothing decisive,” Dolokhov said to Denisov, who, for his part, also made an attempt at reconciliation, and also approached the appointed place.
The place for the duel was chosen 80 steps from the road where the sleigh remained, in a small clearing of a pine forest, covered with snow that had melted from the thaws of the last few days. The opponents stood 40 paces from each other, at the edges of the clearing. The seconds, measuring their steps, laid traces, imprinted in the wet, deep snow, from the place where they stood to the sabers of Nesvitsky and Denisov, which meant a barrier and were stuck 10 steps from each other. The thaw and fog continued; for 40 steps nothing was visible. For about three minutes everything was ready, and yet they hesitated to start, everyone was silent.

- Well, let's start! - said Dolokhov.
“Well,” said Pierre, still smiling. “It was getting scary.” It was obvious that the matter, which began so easily, could no longer be prevented, that it went on by itself, regardless of the will of people, and had to be accomplished. Denisov was the first to step forward to the barrier and proclaimed:
- Since the “opponents” refused to “name”, would you like to begin: take pistols and, according to the word “t”, and begin to converge.
“G...”az! Two! T”i!...” Denisov shouted angrily and stepped aside. Both walked along the trodden paths closer and closer, recognizing each other in the fog. Opponents had the right, converging to the barrier, to shoot whenever they wanted. Dolokhov walked slowly, without raising his pistol, peering with his bright, shining, blue eyes into the face of his opponent. His mouth, as always, had the semblance of a smile.
- So when I want, I can shoot! - said Pierre, at the word three he walked forward with quick steps, straying from the well-trodden path and walking on solid snow. Pierre held the pistol with his right hand extended forward, apparently afraid that he might kill himself with this pistol. He carefully put his left hand back, because he wanted to support his right hand with it, but he knew that this was impossible. Having walked six steps and strayed off the path into the snow, Pierre looked back at his feet, again quickly looked at Dolokhov, and, pulling his finger, as he had been taught, fired. Not expecting such a strong sound, Pierre flinched from his shot, then smiled at his own impression and stopped. The smoke, especially thick from the fog, prevented him from seeing at first; but the other shot he was waiting for did not come. Only Dolokhov’s hurried steps were heard, and his figure appeared from behind the smoke. With one hand he held his left side, with the other he clutched the lowered pistol. His face was pale. Rostov ran up and said something to him.
“No...e...t,” Dolokhov said through his teeth, “no, it’s not over,” and taking a few more falling, hobbling steps right up to the saber, he fell on the snow next to it. His left hand was covered in blood, he wiped it on his coat and leaned on it. His face was pale, frowning and trembling.
“Please…” Dolokhov began, but couldn’t say right away... “Please,” he finished with an effort. Pierre, barely holding back his sobs, ran to Dolokhov, and was about to cross the space separating the barriers when Dolokhov shouted: “to the barrier!” - and Pierre, realizing what was happening, stopped at his saber. Only 10 steps separated them. Dolokhov lowered his head to the snow, greedily bit the snow, raised his head again, corrected himself, tucked his legs and sat down, looking for a strong center of gravity. He swallowed cold snow and sucked it; his lips trembled, but still smiling; the eyes sparkled with the effort and malice of the last collected strength. He raised the pistol and began to take aim.
“Sideways, cover yourself with a pistol,” said Nesvitsky.
“Watch yourself!” even Denisov, unable to bear it, shouted to his opponent.
Pierre, with a meek smile of regret and repentance, helplessly spreading his legs and arms, stood straight in front of Dolokhov with his broad chest and looked at him sadly. Denisov, Rostov and Nesvitsky closed their eyes. At the same time, they heard a shot and Dolokhov’s angry cry.

Izhevsk hockey fans have only been talking lately about when coach Nikolai Myshagin will come to sign a contract with Izhstal? They were waiting for dear Nikolai Ivanovich like a cake coming out of the oven. Well, the impatience of the fans can be explained - there has never been a coach of Myshagin’s caliber in Udmurt hockey. In the Russian time period - certainly.

Finally, they waited - on Thursday, May 12, Myshagin signed a contract and became the fifth coach of the Izhstal hockey team in Russian history. And also the first “non-Izhstal member”. It just so happened that all of Myshagin’s predecessors - Abramov, Smagin, Loginov and Maslov - were flesh and blood “metallurgists”, idols of the local torsida.

The last three were all graduates of Izhevsk hockey. Few doubted that this tradition would be continued. And wow, everyone made a mistake in their forecasts at once! Moreover, what is most curious is that there is no annoyance about this. Well, you didn’t guess – so what now, tear out the hair on your head (if it’s still growing)? Maybe it’s for the best that they didn’t guess right? It is known that there is no prophet in his own country. Now the main thing is not to make mistakes in expectations.

Until recently, nothing connected Myshagin with Izhevsk. However, Nikolai Ivanovich does not hide the fact that he plans to settle in Izhevsk seriously and for a long time. Whether it will work out or not is the second question. In coaching, thinking ahead is useless. Either it will work out or it won't. Fifty fifty. Although Myshagin is seen as exactly the coach who will succeed.

Needed where was born

He is 55 years old. It’s an excellent age for a coach, the age of maturity. And there is still time ahead to accomplish new feats, and we already have experience behind us. Nikolai Ivanovich has a lot of experience. He could already write a book about his coaching share if he wanted to. But he’s just not in the mood for memoirs yet. What kind of book is there when the best chapters are yet to come?

In any case, if suddenly Myshagin’s book does see the light of day, the so-called “Kazakh” chapters will occupy a special place in it. Myshagin is an honored coach of Kazakhstan, and the brightest pages of his coaching biography so far are associated with the national team of this country. Having replaced the legendary Boris Alexandrov as coach of the national team (as well as the Ust-Kamenogorsk Kazzinc-Torpedo) in 2002, Nikolai Ivanovich managed to return the team to the elite division of the World Championship on the first try. In the decisive match, the Kazakhs defeated the Poles with a score of 3:1. “There is a feeling that we are back seriously and for a long time,” the happy coach of the winners said later at a press conference. As a result, Kazakhstan spent three seasons in the elite (from 2004 to 2006), still managing to perform relatively well at the Olympics in Turin (9th place). It so happened that in the first “Myshagin” season, Kazakhstan reached the elite echelon, and in the last one, it was relegated back to the first. Could it be better? It probably could. If in 2006, in the ill-fated match against the Italian national team, the referee had counted a “clean” goal of the Kazakhs with the score 2:3, and the goalkeepers had played, if not above their heads, but at least to their strength, if the draw had been more favorable to the Kazakhs... But even with all these “if only” Myshagin is the most successful coach of the Kazakhstan national team in history. Where, by the way, he actually worked for thanks.

“I am a public trainer,” Myshagin admitted in an interview. – I work on a voluntary basis. I don’t have any contracts or any special papers. So today I’m a coach, and tomorrow...

Would you say this doesn’t happen? And that's what happens. And there’s really nothing to be surprised about here. Nikolai Ivanovich is a man of the old school, from the breed of people from which nails can be made. Material values for them are by no means the most important thing in this life. There is something more important.

This is my homeland,” the coach shrugged when they asked him why he had been volunteering for the national team for four years. - I was born and raised in Ust-Kamenogorsk. As we say: “A bullet flies out of a revolver like a currant. We drank vodka for three – Ustinka is our homeland.” I always go home with pleasure. I have two older sisters living here, many relatives and friends, including those who have nothing to do with hockey.

It is worth noting that Nikolai Ivanovich cannot be denied eloquence. Almost every interview of his can be taken away for quotes. “I have no enemies - I only have assistants in the next world,” he once uttered an aphorism that spread across the country’s largest sports publications. However, we must give Myshagin his due. Nikolai Ivanovich is harsh, but fair. Unlike a number of his coaching colleagues, he is not afraid to admit his own mistakes and will always give credit to his opponent if he deserves it.

"Should not love me…"

Izhstal will become the specialist’s ninth place of work (including the Kazakhstan national team). At one time, Myshagin headed Gornyak (Belovo), Novokuznetsk Metallurg, Almetyevsk Neftyanik, Barys (Astana) twice, Kazzinc-Torpedo (Ust-Kamenogorsk), and Southern Ural (Orsk). And in the last two seasons, the coach worked in the Far East in the Primorye HC club, promoting Ussuri hockey. During this time, “Primorye” twice managed to win the championship of the Siberia - Far East region, plus this season the team won silver medals in the final tournament of the Russian championship among regional club teams.

“You don’t need to love me, I have a wife for that,” Myshagin once said in his style. “But work should be judged by its results.” The coach has proven throughout his career that he can get tired of anything, but not victories. So he will try to achieve the result not by washing, but by skating. Such a character. And by the way, Nikolai Ivanovich will now be able to see his wife much more often: his family lives in Kazan. Almost close, one might say...

Head coach of HC Tambov Nikolai Myshagin: Zhenya was finished off with his feet

Immediately after the bloody incident during the match, Tambov coach Nikolai Myshagin left the team - “I don’t want to deal with bandits!” That evening, he was the only one who tried to defend the player and provide him with first aid. Yesterday, a Soviet Sport correspondent called Myshagin. The coach's frank story made even an experienced journalist turn pale...

Myshagin is an authoritative person in the hockey world. The 67-year-old specialist led the Kazakhstan national team to the 2006 Olympics, finishing ninth in Turin. Nikolai Ivanovich is an honored coach of Kazakhstan, worked in Ustinka and Kuznya. I’m a seasoned coach, but this is the first time I’ve seen how players are killed during a match...

FIGHT IN THE LOCKER ROOM

“This was the second paired game,” Myshagin begins the story. – We lost the first 3:4. Our team is not so hot, there are many local young players. In the second match after the second period we are on fire – 1:4. After the siren for a break, I ask captain Ilya Fedosov: “Calm down the people, especially Pasha Tapilsky.” Pasha is the leader of the team, very hot-tempered. During the period, he yelled at his comrades on the bench. I go to the trainer’s room myself - it’s on the second floor...

Suddenly my assistant bursts in - Roman Burmistrov: “Nikolai Ivanovich, there’s a fight in the locker room! Tapilsky and Muzafarov are beating each other.” I also thought it couldn’t be Muzafarov. The guy from the Urals is quiet, he wouldn’t hurt a fly. Later it turned out that Tapilsky was the first to help, but received a decent amount in return.

I'm going down. I see Zhenya sitting in the corner with a beaten face. I told him: “Are you okay?” He: “Yes, Nikolai Ivanovich, I will play.” I approach Tapilsky, he also has black eyes: “Are you going to play?” Refuses. I'm transferring the seventh defender to the attack instead. Then our director Vladimir Vinogradov comes: “Guys, forget about the fight, go ahead, we must win!” Well, go ahead and go ahead.

“HE'S ALL COVERED IN BLOOD. AND DOESN'T MOVE"

– To get on the ice, we need to go through the second, empty locker room. I notice that there are four people standing against the wall. They are so strong, and the director is next to them. I didn’t attach any importance to it, I passed by. And suddenly there was noise behind me, screams. I turn around, one of the thugs hits Muzafarov on the head with a flourish. Zhenya’s helmet immediately falls off, and they hit him in the face two more times. He falls, not understanding anything. So the four of them kicked him several times with all their strength. Zhenya didn’t even have time to utter a word. Then I came to my senses and yelled: “What are you doing, your mother, you bastards!” And, most importantly, director Vinogradov is standing next to the fighters, chewing gum. Why are you watching, I say, your players are being beaten! They'll kill you to death!

At least he doesn't give a damn. He also started threatening me: keep quiet, it’s none of your business, or you’ll get it yourself. And Zhenya lies covered in blood and no longer moves. I and the guys barely fought him off. He found a stretcher, carried him out into the corridor - to the goal referee's booth with a red light - Zhenya was unconscious. I'm calling the doctor. And there’s no doctor at the match, can you imagine?! There is no doctor at the official RHL match! I’ll say more: we don’t have a doctor on our team. No massage therapist, no technical administrator, no doctor.

Thank God, the rival doctor from Smolensk helped. The Sports Palace nurse came running. But they were unable to bring Zhenka to her senses. An ambulance was called. I left the guy for them, and I joined the team myself. We finished the match, but what kind of hockey is that? Towards the end of the fight, the ambulance arrived and took the boy away. He lay unconscious for half an hour. I sent my son Nikolai and Muzafarov to the hospital. Fortunately, Zhenya recovered and came to his senses.

“VINOGRADOV SHUT THE PLAYERS MOUTHED”

– And you immediately resigned?

- Straightaway! When the siren sounded, I went upstairs to the trainer’s room. Vinogradov bursts in next: “Calm down, everything is fine.” I am beside myself and tell him directly: “Never in my entire career have I felt so disgusting and low! They kill a guy in front of you, and you chew gum. I will not work for such a company. I’m writing a letter of resignation!”

“At least get out tomorrow!” - Vinogradov slams the door. But no! Since October 27, I have been looking for him to sign a statement, but he is hiding. I already went to the first vice-governor of the region, Alexander Sazonov. He promised to sort it out. But to this day I am sitting in Tambov. Vinogradov removed me from the team, but did not fire me either.

It got to the point that they forced me to write an explanation why I was not in the locker room when the fight happened. We have to explain that the guys must rest from the coaches for the first 10 minutes of the break.

Yes, this is not the first time. In Lipetsk, our youngest player, born in 1994, Seryozha Kuzmin, broke his arm during a match. While the guy was writhing on the ice - we don’t have a doctor - Vinogradov sat indifferently on the podium. Fans approached him: “Vladimir Valentinich, what are you doing?! There is no doctor on the team. A shame!". And he feels like he's hitting the wall.

– Were you invited to the police as a witness?

– The investigator came home. I explained everything to him the same way as I did to you – word for word... So after that match, when I had already left, it turned out that one of the fans called the police. Riot police arrived and surrounded the Sports Palace. Meanwhile, Vinogradov gathered the team in the locker room and gave instructions: “I will solve everything with the cops, you haven’t seen anything, we are one gang.” Imagine, his players are a “gang”. By the way, I saw these four guys who beat Zhenya in Lipetsk together with Vinogradov. So draw your conclusions...

P.S. “Soviet Sport” continues to monitor the situation in Tambov. And he is waiting for an answer from the leadership of the FHR to at least one question - why is such a league needed at all, where there are no doctors on the teams, and the players are killed by bandits right during the match?

REACTION OF THE LEAGUE. “THIS IS A CONFLICT WITHIN THE TEAM”

On Wednesday, RHL President Alexander Steblin arrived in Tambov to understand the situation. And yesterday I hastened to make a statement for the press service of HC Tambov. Promptly! And cynical...

“This is a conflict within the team,” Steblin said in a statement. – Who got more and who got less – it’s now difficult to determine. These are not our questions. But a fight is an emergency, incompatible with hockey. The conflict here has apparently been brewing for a long time. Unfortunately, neither the coach nor the club management were able to recognize and prevent it. Just yesterday the mood was critical: to the point of the team being withdrawn from the competition. Now the mood is different. We saw the new ice palace. And they realized that they couldn’t punish the fans. Punishment should be borne by people personally responsible for a particular area of work.

– Are the players involved in this incident disqualified?

– Unfortunately, this is not provided for by the competition regulations.
