Greco-Roman wrestling. History, rules. A sport that dates back many centuries ago is Greco-Roman wrestling. Rules of discipline New rules of Greco-Roman wrestling

Greco-Roman wrestling- an Olympic sport, a combat between two athletes, the goal of which is to put the opponent on his shoulder blades using various techniques. In Greco-Roman wrestling, technical actions with legs (hooks, trips, sweeps) and hand grips of legs are prohibited.

What was the former name of Greco-Roman wrestling?

Until 1948, Greco-Roman wrestling was called French wrestling. Then for some time wrestling was called Greco-Roman, but after that it was renamed classical, and then again began to be called Greco-Roman.

United World Wrestling is an organization that develops Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling and women's wrestling.

History of the emergence and development of Greco-Roman wrestling

All kinds of archaeological finds indicate that wrestling was most popular in Ancient Greece. The importance of wrestling at that time is indicated by its addition to the Olympic Games program immediately after athletics (in 704 BC). Wrestling was part of the system of physical education for children, youth and adults. Many outstanding personalities of Ancient Greece were wrestlers (Milo of Croton, Pythagoras, Plato, Pindar).

The Romans were very interested in the Greeks' passion for wrestling, and they happily adopted it. Unlike the Greeks, the Romans demonstrated wrestling in combination with fist fighting; the winners of these battles became real national idols.

When did Greco-Roman wrestling appear?

The first official mention of Greco-Roman wrestling can be considered its inclusion in the program of the Olympic Games in 704 BC.

At the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries in France, the modern rules of Greco-Roman wrestling were formed:

  • grips are carried out only with hands;
  • The one who manages to put the opponent on both shoulder blades wins the fight, or the advantage of one of the opponents reaches 10 points.

French wrestling is what Greco-Roman wrestling was called until 1948. She quickly found popularity among the common people, and later was able to gain international recognition.

In 1898, the first European Greco-Roman wrestling championship among amateurs took place in Vienna (Austria). 11 athletes from 3 countries (Austria, Germany and Russia) participated.

Greco-Roman wrestling rules

A match at Greco-Roman wrestling competitions consists of two periods of 3 minutes each, with a break of half a minute between periods.

Victory in the match is awarded to the athlete who managed to pin the opponent to the wrestling mat (carcass) with his shoulder blades. A victory is also counted if the wrestler wins two periods on points. If the score is the same, then the judge assigns additional minutes to determine the more active wrestler. Athletes earn points after successfully performing techniques or for violations of the rules by their opponents.

In Greco-Roman wrestling it is prohibited:

  • grab your opponent by the neck with both hands,
  • strike your opponent,
  • lubricate the body with something before a fight,
  • argue with the judge
  • talk to each other.

Wrestling mat

The wrestling mat is a square mat with vinyl covering, the length of each side is 12 m. The minimum thickness of the mat is 4 centimeters.

The “competition area” is a yellow circle with a diameter of 9 m, in the center of which a small inner, or central, circle with a diameter of 1 m is marked in red. Along the perimeter of the 9-meter circle there is a red stripe 1 m wide (“passivity zone”).

Equipment

Before the start of the fight, the judge checks the athletes' nails (they must be cut short), the hair on their head (they must be cut short or pulled back), and the stubble on their face (only a mature beard is allowed). Athletes should not go into battle sweaty.

Equipment for athletes in Greco-Roman wrestling:

  • Leotards for Greco-Roman wrestling in red or blue colors, established by FILA. The color of the tights is determined by lot. Under no circumstances is it permitted to mix red and blue in tights.
  • Wrestling shoes should be made of soft leather and fit tightly around the ankle.
  • Socks should wick away moisture well and secure the foot.
  • Ear protectors must be FILA approved and have no hard parts.
  • The scarf is currently used as a tribute to tradition, as it has been replaced by more modern tampons. A handkerchief or tampons are used to wipe away blood or sweat.

Competitions

The Olympic Games are the most prestigious competitions in Greco-Roman wrestling.

The extraordinary congress of the International Wrestling Federation (FILA) has completed its work in Moscow. A number of important decisions were made at it, which may allow wrestling to regain its status as an Olympic sport. In particular, significant adjustments were made to the rules of wrestling. It will be possible to judge how successfully the congress delegates worked at the end of May, when a meeting of the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) takes place in St. Petersburg. If FILA's presentation impresses Olympic leaders, they may reinstate wrestling as a compulsory Olympic sport.

The FILA Moscow Congress was perhaps the most important in the history of this organization. Let us recall that at the beginning of the year, the IOC Executive Committee excluded wrestling from the list of 25 “protected” Olympic disciplines, which meant that wrestling was at high risk of losing its status as an Olympic sport, starting with the 2020 Games. This is despite the fact that wrestling has always been represented at the Olympics - since ancient times.

The participants of the FILA Congress first of all needed to resolve organizational issues. In particular, to elect a new president. The former - Rafael Martinetti - has discredited himself to a fair extent. After all, he did not even consider it necessary to attend the meeting of the IOC Executive Committee, at which the fate of the sport entrusted to him was decided. By the way, the Swiss was removed from his post back in February and removed from the FILA bureau. However, he appealed this decision to the International Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Not without success - CAS decided to reinstate Mr. Martinetti's membership in the FILA Bureau. True, two more demands contained in his lawsuit - the recognition of the illegal appointment of Nenad Lalovic as the acting head of FILA, as well as the declaration of invalidity of the Moscow FILA Congress itself - were left unsatisfied by CAS.

However, already in Moscow, at a meeting of the FILA bureau that preceded the opening of the congress, Mr. Martinetti, who had declared his intention to participate in the election of the head of the organization, withdrew his candidacy. As a result, Congress almost unanimously (125 votes for and only 7 against) confirmed Nenad Lalovic as president.

However, the more important decisions were those related to changing the rules of wrestling. Their confusion, it must be admitted, gave the judges scope for not the most objective assessments, which often resulted in strange decisions at important tournaments.

So, Congress decided.

From now on, instead of three two-minute rounds, the wrestlers will sort things out over two three-minute periods. The score will again be total across all rounds. An important change was the abolition of points for pushing an opponent off the mat. At the same time, the value of taking the opponent to the ground has been increased - two points instead of one. Also, a wrestler will not be immediately punished for passively conducting a fight. In freestyle wrestling, the athlete will first receive two verbal warnings. After the second, he will have 30 seconds to perform the technique. And only if he fails, the point will be awarded to his opponent. There will be no 30-second countdown in Greco-Roman wrestling. Instead, the more active wrestler will be given a choice: take the opponent to the ground or receive the right to a standing hold.

It was also decided that fights in which a wrestler has a large advantage in the score (10 points for freestyle wrestlers and 7 for Greco-Romans) will be stopped due to the obvious advantage of the leader. It is noteworthy that the rules have already come into force: according to them, yesterday’s match between the US and Canada teams took place in Los Angeles, despite the fact that a number of congress delegates insisted on the introduction of new rules only from January 1, 2014. But FILA simply doesn’t have time to build up. After all, on May 29, a meeting of the IOC Executive Committee will take place in St. Petersburg, at which the wrestlers will need to show something if they really want to retain their status as a basic Olympic discipline.

It seems that other innovations have appeared in the FILA regulations directly to “appease” the members of the IOC Executive Committee. Thus, as part of the desire for gender equality, it was decided to provide a larger quota for women’s wrestling for the 2020 Games. Currently, seven sets of medals are awarded in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, and only four in women's wrestling. FILA proposes to establish a scheme in which everyone receives six sets. The issue of holding fights in each weight category over two days rather than one was also considered. But for now it was decided to simply start contractions earlier - not at 13:00, but at 10:00. Finally, the idea of seeding wrestlers has been approved, which will be based on data from the last world championship. How many seeds there will be - two, four or even six - has not yet been decided.

“The formula for conducting fights, which can be called classic, has been returned. The abolition of marks for push-outs and lots will allow us to revive the spirit of wrestling,” said Mikhail Mamiashvili, president of the Russian Wrestling Federation. He also added that it remains to agree on points regarding the assessment of technical actions and sanctions for passivity, promising that this will happen during the test competitions. “Wrestlers must understand that now they will have to win medals, and no one will give them out anymore,” concluded Mr. Mamiashvili.

We would like to add that an assessment of FILA’s actions will be given in late May, when a meeting of the IOC Executive Committee will be held in St. Petersburg. A presentation of wrestling as a candidate for inclusion in the number of basic Olympic sports is scheduled for May 29. In the meantime, along with baseball/softball, karate, roller sports, rock climbing, squash, wakeboarding and wushu, it retains candidate status. The IOC Executive Committee must select one of the above-mentioned events to recommend inclusion in the 2020 Games program. The final decision will be made by the IOC session, which will be held in September in Buenos Aires.

Today, May 24, the Russian Greco-Roman wrestling championship starts in St. Petersburg. It will be held according to the new rules adopted by the International Federation of Unified Wrestling Styles (FILA) at the extraordinary FILA Congress, which took place on May 18 in Moscow. The sports information agency “All Sport” reports the most important changes.

1. The draw must be manual and open. Each wrestler draws his own lot.
2. Divide the gold, silver and bronze medalists of the previous Russian Championship into different groups.
3. The temporary format of the fight is two periods of three minutes with a 30-second rest break.
4. Evaluation of fighters for passive wrestling:
- Note to the athlete and second;
- First warning and choice of position by the active wrestler in the “ground” or “stand” position;
- The second warning is assessed by one technical point and the choice of the “ground” or “stand” position;
- Third warning – termination of the match, clear victory is awarded to the active wrestler;
- If the score is 0:0, victory is awarded to the wrestler who received the last score for active wrestling;
- Unintentional going beyond the boundaries of the carpet area is assessed with a remark - instead of one point;
- Repeated departure from the mat area is assessed by one point, a warning and an offer to the active wrestler to choose the “ground” or “stand” position;
5. A wrestler's technical actions that end outside the mat area are scored one, two, three, five points.
6. The determination of the passivity of one of the wrestlers by the match judges should be determined optimally in a short time, within 30 seconds from the start of the match.
7. The winner of the fight is determined by the sum of points scored in two periods.
8. A clear victory is awarded to the wrestler who pinned the opponent on his shoulder blades or who scored the total with a difference of seven points.
9. We suggest starting the competition at 11.00. An additional two hours will give the finalists the opportunity to have a good rest and show a beautiful, meaningful fight.
10. Allow the use of a container of water and a damp towel during the second match in the corner of the mat.
11. A wrestler performing a technical action - a rollover on the ground through the shoulder blades (touching the mat with the shoulder blades) - receives one point, and through the “wrestling bridge” - two points. The attacked wrestler does not receive technical points.
12. It is proposed to return to the “parterre” position, as it was before:
- Bottom position: the wrestler sits with his buttocks on his shins, his hands are located no less than 20 centimeters from his knees;
- Top position: the wrestler touches the mat with one knee, palms are placed on the shoulder blades.

Yuri Shakhmuradov:The FILA technical committee submitted a draft of new weight categories to the bureau

On October 29, a meeting of the FILA technical commission was held in Switzerland, at which recommendations on changing the competition rules were adopted for approval by the FILA Bureau. The fundamental decisions of the last meeting were reported to WRESTRUS.RU correspondent Asiya Alimova by a member of the technical commission from Russia, wrestling professor Yuri Shakhmuradov.

Weight categories
One of the key issues of the commission meeting was the adoption of recommendations on changing the boundaries of Olympic weight categories, began Yuri Shakhmuradov. - At the World Championships in Budapest, all national federations presented their proposals. Based on these, the commission first determined the lightest and heaviest categories for each wrestling style. At the same time, the wishes of the IOC were taken into account that the categories in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling should be different. So, for freestyle wrestling, a range of categories was proposed from 57 to 125 kg, for Greco-Roman - from 60 to 130 kg and for women's - from 48 to 75 kg. The remaining weights were distributed between them. Thus, for consideration by the FILA Bureau, the technical commission recommends the following Olympic weight categories: freestyle wrestling - up to 57, 65, 75, 86, 97 and 125 kg; Greco-Roman wrestling - up to 60, 68, 77, 88, 100 and 130 kg and women's wrestling - up to 48, 53, 58, 63, 69 and 75 kg. For the World Championships, the commission adopted two options for new weight categories based on the number of medals up for grabs. The final version will be chosen by the FILA Bureau. The first option involves 8 weight categories, including Olympic ones:
Freestyle wrestling - 57, 61, 65, 70, 75, 86, 97 and 125 kg
Greco-Roman wrestling - 60, 68,72, 77, 82, 88, 100 and 130
Women's wrestling - 48, 53, 55, 58, 60, 63, 69, 75
The second option suggests playing out 9 sets of awards in each style, and distributing the categories as follows:
Freestyle wrestling - 57, 61, 65, 70, 75, 80, 86, 97, 125
Greco-Roman wrestling: 60, 64, 68, 72, 77, 82, 88, 100, 130
Women's wrestling: 48, 53, 55, 58, 60, 63, 66, 69, 75
The commission also proposes to increase the number of weight categories in junior competitions to 10, and make the category boundaries as follows: freestyle wrestling - 50, 57, 61, 65, 70, 75, 80, 86, 97 and 125; Greco-Roman wrestling - 52, 60, 64, 68, 72, 77, 82, 88, 100 and 130 and women's wrestling - 44, 48, 53, 55, 58, 63, 66, 69, 72 and 75 kg.
The main thing now is that new weight categories are introduced as quickly as possible. It was originally planned to hold the first world championship in new categories in 2015 in Las Vegas. However, we believe that they need to be introduced at the next World Championships in Tashkent so that athletes and coaches have more time to adapt and change training methods in accordance with new requirements.

Evaluation of technical actions
The next key point in the commission’s work was to clarify the assessment of technical actions. The main question was that the score for two transfers to the ground should not exceed the score for the throw. Therefore, the commission proposes to leave the score of two points for transfer to the ground, but to increase the value of the throw to 4 points for all throws in freestyle wrestling. A score of 5 points for a throw with amplitude will not be used in freestyle wrestling, since in recent years these techniques have been performed extremely rarely. Thus, in freestyle wrestling, scores of 1 point, 2 points and 4 points will be used. For Greco-Roman wrestling, the score of 5 points for an amplitude throw will be retained, and all other scores will be the same as in freestyle wrestling. In addition, the number of points that a wrestler must score for a clear victory has been changed. Previously, in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, this limit was a difference of 7 points. According to the new rules, in freestyle wrestling, victory will be awarded to a wrestler with an advantage of 10 points, in Greco-Roman wrestling - 8 points.

Competition format
The commission proposes to make fundamental changes to the format of the competition. If changes are approved, the tournament in each weight category will be held over 2 days. On the first day - all preliminary round matches, including semi-finals, on the second day - the final and bronze medal bouts. Competitions must begin at 11 a.m., and the minimum rest period between bouts will be increased from 15 to 30 minutes to allow athletes time to recover. Weigh-in will be carried out as before once before the competition. The commission unanimously decided that the draw should be carried out manually, without the use of computer programs. Once the new rules and weight classes are implemented, the finalists from each weight at the previous World Championships will be seeded on opposite sides of the bracket at both the next World Championships and the Olympics. Moreover, this rule will apply to the countries that the wrestlers represent. For example, if an athlete from Russia won the World Championships and an athlete from Turkey took second place, at the next World Championships the athletes from these countries will be placed on opposite sides of the bracket, even if there are different wrestlers competing. If new categories are introduced in Tashkent, then this rule may begin to work from the World Championships in Las Vegas.

Protests
It is proposed to change the procedure for considering protests submitted during the match. The referees serving this match will not consider such protests. To view the video of the controversial issue, a special, independent commission must be created to determine the correctness of the decision.

New rules holding freestyle wrestling competitions.

“The format of each bout is as follows - two periods of three minutes with a 30-second break,” Djedcic said. - There will be no overtime, no clinching. In freestyle wrestling, for example, if after two minutes none of the wrestlers have earned a point, then the judges must agree and decide which of them is less active. Then this wrestler will have to earn a point in 30 seconds. If he does not do this, then the point is awarded to his opponent. The fundamental point is that now there is no pushing outside the carpet. And the system for assigning points and determining passivity will be finalized at test tournaments. We currently use a one-day competition format. But now we will increase the time due to the fact that contractions will begin not at 1 pm, but at 10 am. There are two more points that will be reviewed in the near future, since the members of the bureau did not reach agreement on them. Firstly, this is a one-day or two-day competition format. Secondly, we intend to introduce the principle of seeding wrestlers according to their rating. It is important that the main leaders do not meet in the very first fights, but reach the finals. The members of the Bureau could not agree on the number of athletes who will be seeded - it is possible that the number will be equal to two or four first numbers.”

New wrestling rules will be introduced on Sunday, May 19. The main change was the abolition of counting in periods that lasted two minutes. From now on, scoring will again be end-to-end, and bouts will consist of two three-minute periods. Also, now two, rather than one, points will be awarded for moving an opponent to the ground, and the match will end early when the difference reaches 10 points in freestyle and seven in Greco-Roman. In addition, overtime, clinches, draws during fights and points for ejections have been abolished.

The procedure for calculating penalty points for passivity has also been changed. So in freestyle wrestling, the athlete will first receive an oral reprimand. After the second warning for passivity, a 30-second countdown begins for the wrestler, and if during this time the opponents do not score points, then his “active” opponent will receive one point. Also in case. If in the first two minutes of one of the periods the athletes do not score points, the judge will be obliged to determine the more passive wrestler, and if within the next 30 seconds he does not score points, then his opponent will receive the point. In Greco-Roman wrestling, the first warning for passivity will also be verbal, and after the second, the “active” athlete will be able to choose what to do - send the opponent to the ground or stand up. After the third warning, the opponent of the passive wrestler will receive a point, and after the fourth - victory in the match.

The scoring system for technical actions and determining passivity will be finalized at test tournaments in the very near future.

Order of the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of the Russian Federation dated June 21, 2010 N 618 on approval of the rules of the sport "freestyle wrestling".

The fight can be won as follows :

· On the “carcass”. A touch is counted when a wrestler presses the opponent with both shoulder blades to the mat long enough for the referee to rule the touch. A touch on the protective surface does not count. If a wrestler presses both shoulder blades to the mat as a result of his own fault or his incorrect technique, the fall is awarded to his opponent.

In the event that a period ends with a score of 0-0, the winner of the period is the wrestler who wins 1 or more points in a cross that lasts a maximum of 30 seconds. When giving warnings, the entire fight must be taken into account. A wrestler who receives 3 warnings within three periods is disqualified.
