Biography of Timur Valeev group keys. Biography. Changes in group composition

The founder, leader and ideologist of the group is vocalist Timur Valeev. Timur has been involved in music since the age of six - at this age his mother took him to a music school to learn to play the piano. After graduating from school, Valeev avoided this instrument for several years, and then suddenly “fell ill” with the guitar. Since then, I have not parted with her, neither at school, nor at home, nor at the institute, nor in the army. While studying at MADI, Timur simultaneously spent days and nights in the Anis studio, gaining experience in the field of music creation - mastering the console, processing, compressors, learning to make arrangements, learning about computers and music programs. Thus, by 1994, he had mastered almost all studio professions and subtleties, and at the same time graduated from college, but began to engage not in a SHOW (as many expected even then), but simply in business (cars, securities, oil products, mutual offsets, etc.) , without ceasing to search for the most adequate form for expressing their creative ambitions already in their own home improvised studio. Work by day, music by night. When in the fall of 97, the body clearly stated that it would not last long without sleep, and it had to choose, Valeev abruptly curtailed his business activities and switched entirely to his already mature musical project, subsequently spending all the money he earned on it.

Under the working title "Timur and companions" at the Soyuz studio, the young group began recording material for the future debut album. “It was just a studio search.” My friends from different groups (from “Serga”, from Vladimir Presnyakov’s group, from “Lead Fog”) and I recorded 7 things, including the songs “Don’t”, “Alone”, “I’ll Become Fire” “- recalls Timur - “We recorded, mixed, listened, evaluated, celebrated (as expected) and it became clear that we urgently needed to assemble a group - a permanent composition.”

The recorded material was distributed to various recording companies and soon received many offers. The musicians themselves did not expect this - much more often they imagined how their creations, unheard, flew into the trash bins.

Keys - meanings and styles

The ambiguity of the word “keys” played a decisive role in choosing the name. There are plumbing keys, adjustable keys, bass keys, treble keys, gas keys, spring keys, and keys to the apartment where the money is. “The musicians decided that the name should be easy to remember and not misinform the listeners. By calling themselves “Keys”, you can do anything. You can create house music, you can open a car repair company, you can sell mineral water, perform romances. And by depicting a wrench on the cover, You can play heavy metal too!

“Grouping music according to some dubious criteria, formulating styles, talking about directions and sticking labels is the job of critics and journalists; we musicians have somewhat different tasks. Today, when almost all the boundaries have been erased and show business has become like porridge in one big pan , the question “What style do you play in?” looks, to put it mildly, stupidly. Pop, rock, rock and roll - today everyone understands it in their own way.”

“If a style statement is a fucking necessity, let it be “URBAN ROMANCE.”

First achievements

In August 1998, a video was shot for the song “Don’t”, which later became the first hit of “Klyuchey”. But two days later the famous August crisis occurred. “The entire budget was completely screwed,” recalls Timur. “Realizing that everything would not be clear with the record companies soon, we decided to direct our efforts to finding musicians.” Quite quickly, bass player Ivan Kurnaev, keyboard player Oleg Bobkov (ex-Chameleon) and drummer Dmitry Sukhachev were found. At that time, Alexander Portnov from the group “Lead Fog” played the guitar (invented and recorded guitar tracks). With this lineup, “Klyuchi” played their first concert. This happened in September 1998 at the 16 Ton club.

It soon became clear that Portnov, who was constantly busy working in Lead Fog, could not be the full-time guitarist of the Keys. Valeev and Portnov began an active search for a new guitarist. “We listened to an incredible number of people until we came across Andryukha,” says Valeev. “Andryukha” is guitarist Andrei Golovanov, a guitar student at a jazz college and a former guitarist of the bands “Strike” and “Legion”. Since then he has become a permanent member of the group.

Soon the group began recording their debut album, which was released at Soyuz studio on June 16, 1999 under the title “You Don’t Know Yet.” A presentation dedicated to this event took place at the Beverly Hills club. In addition to the hit “Don’t”, the album contains the songs “Girl”, “Alone” and “Monday, 5:25” that won the love of fans - an original cover version of a composition by the mastodons of Britpop, the English group “Realto” (this is how the stylistic direction was declared young "Keys"). These three songs fell into heavy rotation on the radio stations “101”, “Nadezhda”, “RDV”, “Russian Radio” and “Our Radio”, and the video for the song “Don’t” began to be played on MTV. The takeoff was rapid.

After the presentation of the disc “You Don’t Know Yet,” the group conducted a large tour of Moscow clubs. “There were concerts almost every day, and sometimes more than once a day. There was no vacation for four months.”

During this tour, the Keys performed at least three historic concerts:

1. Performance in front of a virtual audience of millions at the Radio Gaga club (the concert was broadcast live on radio 101).

2. A heroic performance in an open area in front of the Gorbunov Palace of Culture at an air temperature of 10 degrees below zero.

3. Participation in a concert dedicated to the anniversary of the Kursk radio station in the city of Kursk.

In parallel with the tour in support of the debut album, the group is filming a video for the song “Monday, 5:25”. During filming, the drummer gradually changes. "Dima had an affair. The girl was French. We were filming a video, the key moment was throwing the TV out of the window. At that moment there was some French group of tourists on the street. They began to wonder what was happening. They asked why the TVs were flying. Sukhachev took a long time and persistently explained. And then he began to periodically be absent from the country...” The new magician of wooden sticks, Ivan Vasyukov, was brought by an old magician. “We have a rule in the group: if you leave, find a replacement,” says Timur Valeev.

Preparing a new disk

300 hours in the studio...

Already in the spring of 2000, the group began preparing to record their second album. “We were looking for recording opportunities, funding,” explains Timur Valeev. “We visited a bunch of studios - listened, watched, chose. In mid-June we started recording.” After spending at least three hundred hours in the studio and spending a fairly large amount of money on recording (“I made non-sexual commitments that gave me the funds to record,” says Valeev), by the end of August, Keys was almost done with the recording of a new album.

Adjustment

In mid-September almost all the songs were mixed. Valeev showed them to friends whom he considered authoritative enough to, guided by their advice, evaluate and correct what was written down. Among the “tasters” were: one program director of one of the Moscow radio stations, one producer of a large record company, one leader of a famous group (who, by the way, acted as a sound producer at various stages in many of today’s “fashionable” projects), several professional musicians and several girls from the group's hairdryer club. "I chose a few songs and handed out a dozen cassettes... And then I listened carefully to opinions." After listening to the advice of his friends-critics, Timur went to the dacha, rested for a couple of days, then with “fresh” ears, listened to the recording again for 2 days and made notes, and then returned to the studio and reworked the recorded material for another month and a half. “Of the twelve songs, four songs were remixed and two were rewritten.”

Results

For several months, “Klyuchi” stubbornly sat in the studio and wrote an album, periodically making concert forays into Moscow clubs. “In total, we wrote this album for six months. We were looking for a sound, experimenting...” Dmitry Petrykin acted as a consultant and sound engineer. Then mastering...

At the beginning of December, the song "Klyuchey" "Found" begins to flash on radio broadcasts ("Our Radio", "Europe+", "Russian Radio", "RDV", etc.). Pretty soon it was a wild success with listeners, and in February the group began filming a video clip. Igor Pesotsky was involved in the work - a man who stood at the origins of Russian video making (he once directed the sensational video of the duet Pugachev - Chelobanov "Uninvited Guest", and also worked with such monsters of Russian music as "Agatha Christie" and "Brigade S ", etc.). He has more than 60 videos to his credit. “Pesotsky has long shown interest in our work, and the “Found” video was not a commercial project for him, but rather an interesting work “for an idea,” says Timur. The second The song “Stones” was filmed. “We started filming after signing a contract with JRC and the order for the video clip was given to the RRS studio, the director of the video was Alexey Dubrovin, the cameraman was Shamil Valeev (an unexpected namesake).

For a long time the group could not decide on the scenery for filming. The concept of the song required a rough underground setting. Timur, together with Andrei, the director of the group, director Dubrovin and the Moscow diggers, risked descending into the depths of the Moscow region, courageously wandered around in the dark knee-deep in water all day, and endured a one-on-one meeting with Satanists, mutant rats and illegal chemical factories. After these adventures, apparently fed up with the exotic, "Key" decided to shoot a video in a more decent and, at first glance, safe place. Namely, on the roof of the Taganka Theater. The filming took place on a beautiful sunny day on April 6th.

According to Timur's plan, the lyrical heroine of the song, who shamelessly throws words, was supposed to be personified like stones by a statue.

The following people auditioned for the role of the main character: the Venus de Milo, the Discobolus of Athens, the figure of a spotted fawn, an ordinary bust of Karl Marx and several unidentified girls of perfect appearance. As a result, a statue of the Maiden was chosen, performed by sculptor Alexei Dyakov. The girl turned out to be the most perfect: she had neither a head, nor arms, nor legs, respectively, but beauty was present in the most ideal form. The role of the head of the statue was superbly performed by the work of the sculptor Aslan, a representative of a different architectural school than Dyakov (Dyakov - Stroganovskoe, Aslan - Surikovskoe). During the filming, Timur discovered a previously unknown talent for climbing steep brick walls without insurance and special equipment - “on his fingers,” but these shots were not included in the video, but moments were included when Timur, who, to put it mildly, does not like heights, walks on edge of the roof.

The new, second album of the group "Klyuchi" is being released at the JRC studio - the release is scheduled for the end of May 2001.

3. Andrey Golovanov - guitar.

4. Oleg Bobkov - keyboards.

5. Pavel Elkind - drums.

Timur Valeev.

Andrey Golovanov.

He studied flute at a music school. Then - in jazz college, guitar class. He played in the bands "Strike" and "Legion". At 98 he joined the group "Klyuchi". Likes to surf the Internet. Friends characterize him as a person “with an awesome sense of humor. A great master, he does all sorts of tricks, and has a very subtle and sophisticated sense of humor.”

Pavel Elkind.

Drummer. Member of the group since August 2001. He replaced Ivan Vasyukov, who moved to the "7B" project). Perhaps it is too early to draw conclusions, but even in this short period of time, Pavel managed to establish himself as a musician with high internal organization. Sociable, tactful, professional attitude to work. Loves to drink beer. Arrives for all meetings 5 minutes before the scheduled time.

Oleg Bobkov.

And our Vanya is very kind and sympathetic."

The average age of musicians is 25 years.

What kind of music do the Keys like?

Timur: “Many performers of the same genre as us and heavier have something good. Osbourne, Scorpions, Bryan Adams, Cranberrys, Portishead, U2, Metallica. We all like Metallica, but to say that we are fans, It’s impossible, we treat authorities quite calmly. Creating idols for ourselves is generally harmful. We treat albums evaluatively: whether U2 recorded a cool album or not, everything is noted and discussed, but at the same time Oleg finds something interesting for himself in the more pop ones. , pop performers. We: Ivan, Andrey and I, see this to a much lesser extent. Oleg is much more familiar with Russian music than others - be it classical or pop - it doesn’t matter. Of ours, I would note Zemfira, in principle, for her personality. Lead Fog - for the idea and quality, Petkun - for the lyrics, Okean Elzy - for musicality, Leprikonsov, Lyapisov and Zhukov - for the jokes, Lepsa - for the vocals, Lagutenko - for the charm and individuality, Moral Code, Nogu Svelo, Galanina - for the high professionalism, Picnic - for all of the above, Snipers... And many, many more are worthy of respect, you just can’t remember them all right away...”

Timur Valeev about joint creativity for the benefit of “Klyuchey”:

"The main thing is the result. Sometimes the text is not born, and you will sit and be dumb. In this case, it is very useful to formulate a problem for someone... What is the point, for example, of communicating with a psychoanalyst? He won’t teach you anything. He will just ask such questions that you yourself will have to answer. And when you formulate a task for the text, for the music, you have to say it out loud. So you understand what you need. In the end, if they don’t write it, you’ll write it yourself.”

“It seemed to me that the text of the song “Stones” had a weak verse. I met with Sasha Shaganov and told him: “Sasha, it seems to me that this is a crappy verse. Come on, you'll finish him off." He replied: "Old man, don't repeat these 2 lines in the second verse, come up with others. Otherwise, everything is super, the mood is conveyed very accurately, congratulations - it’s a hit.”

“When Oleg Kustov brought the song “Fiction” to us, it was a clear song for the fire. I said that, undoubtedly, it was a cool text, a good song, but it had nothing to do with us. Then Dima Sukhachev came to visit me, our drummer. I told him that there is such a song, and if something can be done with it, then it would be good. Dima said that he would try to harmonize it. He sat at my house at the piano and harmonized for 3 hours. the whole harmony has been changed, but the melody remains the same."

Changes in group composition

Since the end of the summer of 2001, a new drummer Pavel Elkind appeared in the group. Pasha replaced Ivan Vasyukov, who left the group, moving to another musical group. So far, all general photographs of the group depict Ivan. Pasha is the youngest member of the team, not only in terms of time spent there, but also in age.

Help from Brainity.ru

The Klyuchi group appeared in one of the most difficult periods for young groups - in 1998, when an economic crisis hit the country. But, despite the seeming impossibility of breaking through, Timur Valeev and his musicians managed to overcome all obstacles. Now the group occupies a strong place in its musical niche, successfully gives concerts in the best clubs in Moscow and releases records. On April 14, the presentation of the new album “Shoot Without Aiming” took place in B2.

Brainity: Let's start with how you came to the Russian scene. Was it scary not to get through, and what did you do to make it work?

It wasn't scary, this wasn't the case. The confidence that everything would work out didn’t come right away, of course, but there was no challenge to break through. The task was to record my songs well. Then, of course, I wanted to demonstrate them to the audience. And then it started snowballing...

Brainity: Do you think that a musician’s job is simply to make music, and everything else is the work of management and providence?

This is both true and false. The main job of a musician is to make music. But if there was no breakthrough friend or person nearby who believed in you, then do it “on the table”? I didn't want to go to the table. And so I did a lot to ensure that as a result they believed in my creativity.

Brainity: In the group “Klyuchi” are you only the musical leader or some other trade unionist?

The concept of “leader” implies this very leadership in all senses - both in music, and in the life of the group, and in its ideology, and so on.

Brainity: Do you like being a leader? Do you think it's difficult?

Now I can do this quite easily, since I build all relationships very openly, and most importantly, on mutual respect. The difficulty is usually that the one who leads is responsible for everything. Including for failures. Well, here you need to be able to take a blow.

Brainity: What do you think determines the human desire for leadership or, conversely, for executive roles?

On the one hand, I believe that these are natural qualities. But on the other hand, if at some point you are faced with the question of whether it is possible to consciously cultivate leadership qualities in yourself, and you begin to do this, then this is a manifestation of leadership.

Brainity: Do you think ambition is a good thing in our time? Can you call yourself an ambitious person?

A very interesting question. Ambitiousness is one of the few qualities that can be a positive and a negative factor in different contexts. If you have little ambition, this prevents you from developing and achieving your goals. If they seriously exceed all other qualities of a person, that is, what he really is is a clinic. It's difficult with these people

about communicating, and it is usually difficult for me to find a common language with them. If only because most often they do not know how to hear. It is ideal when ambition coincides with talent, hard work and responsibility.

Brainity: Do you think that a musician is partly a stage character? Or is theater unacceptable in music?

Any person on stage - musician, politician, actor, lecturer - is already a stage character. How natural and open he should be is his choice. Unless, of course, we are talking about the producer’s “singing cowards.” For me, in any situation it is important to be yourself. Which, however, does not mean that if lyrics dominate in my songs, then I am concerned with issues of romantic relationships from morning to evening. This is my conscious choice - what to sing about, and then at this moment in time. Maybe tomorrow I'll sing about sausage. Although it’s unlikely... (laughs).

Brainity: In your opinion, are the audience or the musicians the masters of the situation at concerts?

Initially, probably still an artist. If this is not the case when the audience came to throw tomatoes at him, in this situation it will be difficult for him to remain the master of the situation. To the extent that he and his music are talented and charismatic in order to fully hold the attention of the audience, so, apparently, he will remain the master of the situation.

Brainity: How do you feel about advice and advisors? Do you rely on the opinions and advice of your fans?

Yes, sometimes. I believe that advice should be given when asked.

Brainity: Do you personally enjoy being an advisor and mentor to others, such as younger, aspiring musicians?

I don’t yet have the credentials to feel like a real mentor... But I’m happy to share my experience.

Brainity: Can you name the people who made you become a musician?

If only my mom and dad, who, when I was 6 years old, still managed to get me to sit at the piano. Although I was very restless as a child!

Brainity: Do you think human development is more related to himself or to the people and environment around him?

If a person wants to develop, he develops. And the environment in our time is more of a person’s choice. It's a pity that sometimes he is irresponsible.

Brainity: If you could start your journey over again now, would you change anything? Would you start making music the same way?

I would probably change something. In the little things. When, without thinking, you offended someone. Or when you didn't do enough. But in general, of course, no, and I would focus specifically on music. Moreover, as for my younger years, I would study music even more purposefully, without distractions, without wasting time and energy.

Brainity: What do you think is the main mistake a beginning musician should not make?
