Today, July 2, two regular matches of the 1/8 finals of the World Championship will take place. The main favorite of the tournament, Brazil, will play Mexico; in the second match, Belgium will face Japan.

Two days have already passed since the start of the playoff stage and we have seen four amazing matches in their intensity. We were especially pleased with the second game day, which featured a fan-favorite action - a penalty shootout. Or to be more precise, even two. Based on the results of these matches, two quarterfinal pairs became known. But let's take things in order.

Four matches of the 1/8 finals have already taken place, let's look at each one separately.

France 4 – 3 Argentina(13′ Griezmann pen., 57′ Pavard, 64′,68′ Mbappe - 41′ Di Maria, 48′ Mercado, 93′ Aguero)

In the first match of the playoffs of this World Cup, a scoring extravaganza awaited us. Both teams played quite boldly on the attack, freeing up the opponent's zones, but the French were luckier. Although the score seemed too tight, France looked as if they would not be embarrassed by the goals they conceded - they would simply score more. Argentina looked somewhat helpless, especially after missing a penalty in the first half. But Di Maria's skill and luck with a rebound from Mercado at some point even allowed the South Americans to take the lead. However, not for long, then the French, and especially Mbappe, showed off their excitement. And after Aguero’s goal at the very end, the final whistle immediately sounded.

Uruguay 2 – 1 Portugal(7′,62′ Cavani - 55′ Pepe)

A match between two equal teams, in which everything was decided by the genius of Cavani. To put it mildly, Ronaldo’s game did not work out, but he tried and wanted to, but it was not possible to decide the outcome of the meeting as usual. But everything turned out great for Cavani. Having scored at the very beginning of the meeting, the Uruguayans put Portugal in the position of a winning side. And when in the second half Pepe equalized the score with a header from a set-piece, already 7 minutes later Cavani scored the second, which forced the Portuguese to run to recoup again. The second time it didn’t work out and Ronaldo, following Messi, leaves the tournament.

Spain 1 - 1 Russia (on penalties 3-4)(12′ Ignashevich ag. — 41′ Dzyuba pen.)

Another favorite left the tournament, and Russia historically finds itself in the quarter finals of the world championship. The match turned out to be incredibly boring for an outside fan: Spain rolled mints, Russia sat on the defensive. And this did not change throughout the entire 120 minutes, as evidenced by 75% to 25% ball possession in favor of the Spaniards. Yes, the teams exchanged goals, taking advantage of their rare chances, but it is worth noting that Spain did not have much more scoring chances than defending Russia. In the penalty shootout, Akinfeev came out on top, parrying two shots from the spot.

Croatia 1 – 1 Denmark (on penalties 3-2)(1′ Jorgensen - 4′ Mandzukic)

The active start of the match and the exchange of goals slightly cooled the ardor of both teams. After which both the Croats and the Danes were too careful and hoped solely for a mistake by their opponent, this did not happen. Although in the 116th minute a penalty kick was awarded against Denmark: Modric's shot was saved by Schmeichel and sent the game into a penalty shootout. Both goalkeepers were at their best, parrying shot after shot, but luck was on the side of the Balkans. It's a pity for Schmeichel, he did everything he could.

Now let’s take a look at the updated playoff bracket:

Game schedule for July 2, 2018. Our forecast

17:00 Brazil - Mexico Match TV

Brazil is considered the clear favorite for the match, but we have already seen how Mexico can rally for a match with a big team. However, the Mexicans themselves are not so small; the current team has already won the Youth World Cup and is ready for victories now. However, we don’t believe in sensation here.

Prediction: Brazil 2 - 0 Mexico

21:00 Belgium - Japan Channel One

Here we can say the same as about the first match, only the team statuses are slightly lower. The Belgians are in amazing shape and are clearly not even thinking about relegation at such an early stage. The Japanese have a very well-played team, which will not give the Belgian attack as many free zones as the Panamanians and Tunisia.

Prediction: Belgium 1 - 0 Japan

The eight best football teams in the world are known who will fight for access to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup. Each of these teams defeated strong opponents on their way to the quarterfinals.

Russia

In the 1/8 finals, the hosts of the 2018 World Cup faced one of the tournament favorites – Spain. The Russians won in a penalty shootout and qualified for the quarterfinals. In the next round, Cherchesov's team will compete with Croatia.

Uruguay

Uruguay is also among the teams that reached the quarter finals of the 2018 World Cup. In the first round of the playoffs, the Latin Americans faced a serious opponent - Portugal. Oscar Tabares' team blocked Cristiano Ronaldo, scored two goals and reached the quarterfinals in France.

France

Didier Deschamps' team performs better in every match. The French concede a lot, but score even more. France knocked out Argentina, losing the match with a score of 1:2. However, it will be much more difficult for Europeans with Uruguay.

Belgium

In the first four matches of the tournament, the Belgians never even played a draw. However, in the first round of the playoffs they were close to elimination from the 2018 World Cup. The confrontation against Japan became very difficult for the team. Belgium advanced to the quarter finals only thanks to a goal in the last minute.

Brazil

The main favorite of the 2018 World Cup continues to perform confidently. In the last round, Brazil beat Mexico almost without problems and advanced to the quarter finals of the 2018 World Cup. The next opponent of the five-time world champions will be Belgium.

Croatia

The Croats received serious resistance from the Danes in the 1/8 finals. Croatia missed an early goal, then came back, but the match went to a penalty shootout. “Checkered” turned out to be more skilled in 11-meter shots.

England

The English only beat Panama without any problems. Already in the first round of the playoffs, the team faced a serious opponent - Colombia. The British were able to reach the quarter finals of the 2018 World Cup only through a penalty shootout.

Sweden

The Swedes continue to be spectacular at the 2018 World Cup. First, the Scandinavians won the group that included the world champions. Then they knocked out the more skilled Swiss team from the tournament. Sweden fully deserved to participate in the quarter finals of the 2018 World Cup.

In the 1/8 finals of the FIFA World Cup, the Russian national team faced the Spanish national team. The Spanish and Russian football players played overtime, but the winner was determined only in a penalty shootout. The Russian national team reached the quarter finals of the world football championship for the first time.

At the main Moscow stadium "Luzhniki" a match took place between the national teams of Russia and Spain in the 1/8 finals of the FIFA World Cup. The King of Spain was present at the game Philip VI and Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev with his wife, as well as the head of FIFA Gianni Infantino, located on the VIP stand. President of Russia Vladimir Putin did not appear at the match, but promised that he would definitely will hurt for the national team.

In the first half, the Russian team was significantly inferior to the Spaniards in possession of the ball and played second. The “red fury” realized its advantage already in the 12th minute. After a dangerous free kick Sergey Ignashevich, pushing away Sergio Ramos, sent the ball into his own goal. The defender of the Russian team became the oldest player to score an own goal at the World Cup. After scoring the goal, the Russians were unable to push the game away from their goal, but after a corner kick the ball hit the Spanish player's hand, and the referee awarded a penalty. Penalty converted Artem Dzyuba. The first half of the game ended with the score 1:1.

In the second half the score remained unchanged. Both teams showed several sharp moments near the opponent's goal, but failed to change the score. The nature of the game also remained the same, with the Spanish team predominantly controlling the ball.

Since the teams failed to “sort things out” in regular time, an extra half followed after two halves had been played. The Russian team has not played in overtime for ten years. The last time this happened was at Euro 2008, when Russian football players beat the Netherlands with a score of 3:1. Two 15-minute periods passed without a goal being scored, although Spain still had a significant advantage in possession most of the time and were unable to find a winner.

The outcome of the match was decided in a penalty shootout that followed overtime. Goalkeeper of the Russian national team Igor Akinfeev managed to repel two goals, burying the last hopes of the Spanish football players and fans, and thanks to this, the Russian team advanced to the quarter finals of the world championship. The Spanish team, following other World Cup favorites - the teams of Germany, Argentina and Portugal - is leaving the World Cup.

Let us remind you that the home World Cup became the most successful for the Russian team in its history. For the first time in 32 years, the national team managed to reach the 1/8 finals of the world football championship. Its entry into the playoffs was preceded by three matches in the group series. In the opening match, which also took place at the capital's Luzhniki Stadium, Russian football players surprised football fans by scoring a resounding success and beating the Saudi Arabian team with a score of 5:0. The next game with the Egyptian national team also turned out to be successful: the Russian team won with a score of 3:1, and even the famous Mohamed Salah- the main star of the Egyptian team. The third match, in which the Russians played with the Uruguay team, ended not in favor of the team of the host country of the championship with a result of 3:0, and as a result, they finished their performance at the group stage in second place in Group A. Now, after the match with Spain, only wish the Russian football players a successful game in the quarterfinals of the 2018 World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup, which is taking place in Russia, presented the viewer with a wonderful spectacle - an excellent game of football!

The group qualifying matches and the playoff matches of the 1/8 finals demonstrated how exciting, eventful, unpredictable moments and curiosities a world-scale sporting event can be!

Take, for example, the fact that in the group matches and the 1/8 finals the irreparable and unforeseen happened: the famous football favorites were dropped from the list of teams that will compete for medals - the national teams of Germany, Portugal, Argentina and Spain did not make it to the 1/4 finals , firmly seated there during past championships.

But the fans were pleased with the goals scored - out of 56 matches played, only one ended without a goal - an ineffective draw (0:0) was demonstrated in the final game of the group qualifying round by the teams of France and Denmark.

One of the unpredictable events of the 2018 World Cup that no one expected was the entry into the quarter finals of completely untitled teams - Sweden and Russia.
