After running became fashionable in Moscow, the issue of summer sports leisure was resolved. But at minus 20, the call to lace up sneakers in a normal person only evokes a reflex to twirl his finger at his temple. Finding a worthy winter replacement for summer jogging is also difficult because this is a budget activity that does not require complex equipment, and sleepy Moscow parks in the morning are beautiful and publicly accessible areas.

Skating is popular in Moscow, but this activity is more likely associated with mulled wine than with sports. The only thing left is cross-country skiing, because you can ride them almost anywhere there is snow. The only problem is their reputation: when thinking about regular skis rather than alpine skis, most people recall memories of out of breath schoolchildren being tormented by their physical teacher near a pond. It seems like a joyful activity - frost, skis, a hat with a pompom - but for some reason you can’t skate.

The adidas company has undertaken to reform the reputation of skis. They realized that cross-country skiing is the most suitable sport for our latitudes, but it’s just technically complicated. To get rid of associations with school, lean grandfathers near Moscow and irony in the spirit of the Pep-See group, adidas put the concept of a base at the core of its ski promotion campaign. The gathering place before and after skiing is also important in the ski world - a whole après-ski culture has formed in European resorts with its own style of clothing and social pastime. Cross-country skiing is much more accessible than mountain skiing, so the requirements for the base are much simpler. To be given hot tea and fed with soup. Have a friendly trainer help you with the basics. Well, after the skiing - socializing with a DJ.

What to take with you

Wear warm, comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement, preferably with a water-repellent layer. There are mannequins dressed in adidas ski suits right at the base, but they are not sold or rented here. But there is an interactive display with tips on how to better equip and ski. Well, since adidas Skibase is still a showcase of a sports brand, there is a monitor with its catalog right there - you can order clothes directly from here.

Place

The structures of Roman Abramovich are related to Meshchersky Park, and, like everything they are related to - from the Garage Museum to New Holland in St. Petersburg - it is beautiful. In the summer, as Wikipedia reports, honeysuckle, warty euonymus, lungwort, green grass, hoofed grass, and also runners are found here. And in winter, until recently, only residents of the nearby writer’s village of Peredelkino could be found skiing in Meshchersky Park.

The adidas Skibase is now here. The building was based on a former sports equipment rental building. The design was created with an eye to high-mountain chalets. The result was a wooden one-story house illuminated by warm light with high windows at the very entrance to the park. In the lobby there were chairs, a large touchscreen with a choice of ski uniforms, a vending machine with snacks, changing rooms with drawers (for 200 rubles you can change clothes and leave things or valuables here - in the administrator's safe).

They also provide skis, poles and Fischer bindings, as well as headlamps for evening training. All this is given free of charge to those who register for classes in exchange for a deposit of 5,000 rubles, a student card or a driver’s license. After the training, everyone who rented a box and/or skis can drink tea and cookies for free at the reception desk. On days when events are held here, DJs are invited to the base, treated to decent food and mulled wine - again, they do not charge money for all this. It is convenient to follow event announcements in Facebook bases.

Workout

From the adidas Skibase lodge there are ski routes with distances of 2, 6.4 and 10 km. Groups of up to 20 people, led by cheerful trainers, walk along them - there is an option for beginners, and there is one for those who regularly attended physical education classes during their school years. All instructors come from the Russian Ski Federation or are professionals with relevant coaching certificates, who, unlike your physical teacher, are distinguished by a sympathetic attitude towards their students. When the author of this text fell half a kilometer behind, tangled in skis and poles, the coach returned to help me, giving me some practical advice on skating technique.

The cost of classes is graduated depending on the size of the group and the qualifications of the athlete. Introductory training for beginners, which you can attend until you master the basic principles, is free (up to 20 people in a group, duration - 1 hour), group costs 600 rubles (up to 12 people in a group, duration - 1.5 hours), in mini-group - 1600 rubles per person (2-4 people, duration - 1.5 hours), individual - 2600 rubles (duration 1.5 hours).

To sign up, you need to register at or call the base. Please note that entry there is carried out using an adidas universe card - it can be issued in the company’s stores or received on the spot.

“We set ourselves the task of reviving the trend for cross-country skiing. In the USSR it was a popular sport, but in Russia the popularity of skiing waned because schools forced them to ski and generally taught this sport to children incorrectly, which discouraged many from any desire. Traditionally, it is believed that this is a difficult sport: you put in a lot of effort - get ready, go somewhere by train, then have an hour-long training session, and again take the train home. We wanted to recreate the atmosphere of a high-altitude resort with a cozy atmosphere - a little in the spirit of the video for George Michael's song “Last Christmas”. To make it convenient to change clothes, there was a place to eat and warm up after classes, and listen to music. We held parties with food and DJs throughout the January holidays, and I noticed that every visitor spent at least an hour at the base after skiing. We are counting on amateurs or complete beginners: you can rent boots and skis from us if you don’t have your own - many people were scared off by skiing by the need to buy equipment.”

There is a lot of talk about the need to come up with a new identity for Russia - not only in the tourist version with accordion and bears, but also one that is suitable for the domestic market. And the fact that Russians themselves associate cross-country skiing more with the Scandinavian countries seems to be an unfortunate mistake. It is clear that the relevant ministries and departments must correct the situation, but the opening of adidas Skibase is a small and wildly important step on this path.

Meshchersky Park can be reached by bus from the Filevsky Park metro station to the Meshchersky Pond stop and by train from Kievsky Station to the Skolkovo platform. The cost of using adidas Skibase services is 250 rubles. You will have free access to a locker, a heated changing room and a shower. Those who have paid for the training can use the locker rooms and receive a complete ski kit - skis, ski poles, bindings, boots and a flashlight for evening training. Bring your student license to deposit your ski kit.

Meshchersky Park differs from other parks in Moscow. There are no tractors clearing everything, no Tajiks filling the paths with sand and granite chips. This has an impact on the quality of the ski slopes in this park
Ski slope in Meshchersky park. It consists of alleys and bicycle paths prepared by snowcats throughout the park. The route runs in both the western and eastern parts of the park (if you divide it along the wide gas pipeline alley).

  • In the eastern part of the park the route runs along very wide alleys. The width of the route can reach ten meters. There is practically no relief in this part of the park, but there is lighting
  • In the western part of the park, the route runs along a bicycle path, as well as along the Setun River. On the bike path the track is very wide. However, there is practically no relief. The part of the route that runs along the Setun River has several climbs, but in some places it is quite narrow (the width of one snowcat) and there are sharp turns. The park administration installs protective nets and covers the railings with mattresses. Just imagine this in some other Moscow park!
The lack of a clear direction of movement is compensated by the width of the route. Skiers move freely and there is still room left. In general, this is not a route in the generally accepted sense - it is a park where snowcats have covered all the places where a snowcat could pass! There are no paths for pedestrians, no paths for cyclists, etc. Everyone gets along well in the park, as the width of the paths allows. And dog walkers, and mothers with strollers and cyclists. And no one asks to clear the paths and sprinkle salt on them. In general, the administration of Moscow parks should be brought to this park so that they can see what a normal park should look like.
In 2015-2016, an adidas ski base operated on the track. Now (season 2016-2017) ski rental is available at this place.
